FAQ

  • What Does Shot in the dark do?

We're an independent television, film, and documentary production company based in New Orleans, Louisiana. We develop, produce, and deliver premium factual and reality series for global broadcasters, streaming platforms, and distribution partners.

Our sweet spots are true crime, history, science, nature, and the unexpectedly strange. We have an abiding interest in the dramatic dark, weird and wonderful corners of the human experience that most people walk right past.

But with our partners, we do it all: reality, competitions, YouTube series, full-length films, you name it. We’ve got someone for that.

  • Why New Orleans? Is It Just ...A Vibe?

It's a lot more than a vibe (though the vibe is unmatched). New Orleans is one of the most storied, haunted, resilient, and visually extraordinary cities on Earth. For a company that makes series about true crime, historic hauntings, extreme weather, and unexpected disasters, this city is an endless well of show-stealing stories.

There's also the practical matter of Louisiana's impressive 40% entertainment tax credit, which we leverage on every qualifying project. A good portion of our business is focused on coproductions and productions for hire. That tax incentive translates directly into more production value for our partners at no extra cost.

  • Who Is Running the Show?

Shot in the Dark is led by Emmy-nominated editor and multi-talented producer Chris Pownall and award-winning journalist-turned-producer Jacquelyn Ryan. Between them, they bring decades of experience in television, documentary filmmaking, and journalism to every project.

We control our own in-house production and post-production, which means we're nimble, efficient, and don't outsource the parts that matter. When you work with us, you're working with the people who actually make the show.

  • Where Can I Watch Your Shows?

Our shows air and stream across a wide range of platforms from CBS to Magellan TV. Among them, Targeted for Murder is on the True Crime Network and streams on Roku, Tubi, Pluto, Amazon Prime, and The CW. Fatal Crimes broadcasts in syndication nationwide. Beyond Catastrophe airs on Cottage Life, PolSat and others internationally.

Odds are, you already have access to at least one of these. Check your TV listings and streaming services — we might already be in your queue.

  • What's the Through-Line of Your Original Series?

We are drawn to stories about the moment when the expected world ruptures and something shocking takes its place. Whether it's a neighbor who turns violent, a hurricane that changes a community, a ghost in a 200-year-old mansion, or a goat who got mixed up in a felony, the stories explore the fragility of ordinary life and the extraordinary things that happen when it cracks.

We tell stories with emotional weight, visual power, and a healthy respect for the strangeness of being alive. In the end, we are all so much more alike than we are different.

  • What's It Like To Work With You?

We're a lean, experienced team that treats commissioning and co-production partnerships seriously. We are always fully prepared, communicate clearly, deliver on time and within budget, and stay hand-in-hand with our partners as much as they’d like.

We can handle development, production, and post-production in-house, which keeps quality high and surprises low. Our partners are working with one focused team that owns the whole pipeline instead of a patchwork of vendors.

  • What's the Deal With Louisiana's 40% Entertainment Tax Credit?

Louisiana offers one of the most generous entertainment production incentives in North America: up to 40% transferable tax credits on qualified production expenditures. We have a strong, proven track record of qualifying for and leveraging this incentive.

In practical terms: Your dollars go further when you produce with us in Louisiana than virtually anywhere else. That means higher production value for the same budget. It's why some of the world's biggest productions shoot here.

We're happy to walk you through the specifics for your project. If we aren’t the right fit, we certainly know who would be. Just reach out.

  • Are You Open To International Partners?

Actively and enthusiastically. We develop projects with international co-production in mind and have experience working with broadcasters and distributors across North America and beyond, including Blue Ant Media, Farpoint Films, and others.

If you're a broadcaster or distribution partner looking for distinctive, high-impact nonfiction programming with built-in financial incentives, we'd genuinely love to hear from you.

  • How Do I Get In Touch About Partnerships?

Use the contact form on our About page or reach out directly to Executive Producer Chris Pownall. We respond to serious inquiries promptly.

A note: we don't accept unsolicited materials. But if you have a compelling project concept and want to explore a collaboration, we do encourage you to reach out and start the conversation. (The worst we can say is not yet.)

  • How Can I Be On One of Your Shows?

We love hearing from people with stories to tell. Visit our Casting page for current opportunities and submission information across our active productions.

Whether you're a survivor, an expert, a witness, a historian, a homeowner with a very interesting ghost situation, or an animal whose involvement in a legal proceeding remains a matter of public record: We want to hear from you.

  • Do You Work With Local Talent and Crews?

Absolutely and intentionally. New Orleans has a remarkable creative community with deeply skilled crew members, incredible on-camera talent, and a local production infrastructure that punches well above its weight. We're proud to be part of that ecosystem and to bring work to Louisiana-based professionals whenever possible.

    We love Louisiana.

  • Why Should I Watch Your Shows Over Everything Else Out There?

Fair question. We care a lot about what we create and the viewers who will watch it. We focus on creating something new and fresh with every show. We approach stories with real journalistic research and a genuine respect for the people whose lives we're depicting.

Truthfully, we love what we do. That sounds like a small thing, but we think you can feel the difference between a show made by people who are excited about it and one that was assembled to fill a slot. Our shows are made by people who stayed up too late thinking about them. And who know what it’s like to have everything turned upside down in the blink of an eye. We use all of that to tell stories that are worth every minute a viewer spends with them.

Check some out and see if you agree.
